What is a justifiable shooting:

I2RAP

Many thanks to Attorney Andrew Branca, my prof, and lawofselfdense.com for his insight and wisdom on this topic.

Know that state law varies a little from state to state but generally they are the same.  Know also, that in order for you to have a plea of self defense, you must admit to actually shooting someone.  Meaning that you are in fact charged with Homicide or Aggravated Assault.

In order to be relieved of the guilt due to defending innocent life, all 5 of the following criteria must be met:

  • Innocence

  • Immanence

  • Reasonableness

  • Avoidance

  • Proportionality

We will discuss these in detail some in class and use them to decide in your sims if you are justified.

Dry Fire Rules

I encourage you to practice with your firearm frequently, even when not at the range.  We do this by doing, what is referred to as dry fire.  Dry fire is very important to creating muscle memory.  Pulling from the holster and pointing in to a target with the weight of your pistol helps create those memories.  So, if you do this you MUST set a high standards of disciple and compliance with the following rules:

  • Safe the firearm by safely unloading it as instructed.

  • Store the all the ammo in a separate room from the one you will be dry firing in.

  • Once in the practice area double check your firearm to verify it is empty.

  • Say to yourself out loud “I am starting training in dry fire.

  • Set measurable goals for yourself like draw stroke practice, slide manipulation, engagement and presentation, etc.  Do everything slowly at first and increase speed as you progress.

  • Practice for 20 minutes and not more than 30.

  • When you have completed your session goals, go load your firearm, lay it in the palm of one hand and place the other over it and repeat at least 5 to 10 times out loud “Training is over, this gun is dangerous.

  • Re-holster or safely store your firearm.
